Audio of this session is available at http://www.nutoolkit.org under "Multimedia Toolkit."
Paralleling the CNU XIV theme, Developing the New Urbanism, NextGen invited developers under the age of 35 who are currently managing New Urbanist projects to get their inside view on the challenges and opportunities on the front lines of implementation.
In the morning session Anna Lowder & Harvi Sahorta discussed efforts on urban revitalization & the new town of Hampstead outside Montgomery, Alabama; Jed and Katie Selby shared the story of South Main River Park in Buena Vista, Colorado; Sara Struever talked about the founding of Puente and "The Plant" mill redevelopment in Providence, Rhode Island.
Afternoon: Website Introduction and Open Space
The afternoon marked the return of a NextGen anchor activity Open Space Technology. You can view the results here: NextGen3 OpenSpace. The Open Space format allows participants to generate their own agenda of topics and dynamically organize in small groups to share, interact, network and collaborate. The results from the previous open space sessions can be found on the NextGen website: http://www.cnunextgen.org/congress.php
Throughout the Congress
Friday: NextGen3 meeting
NextGen shared our activities with the general congress and members who were unable to attend the full day.
Saturday: Academy to Practice
NextGen invited educators and practitioners to discuss the state of New Urbanism in university education and its role in the formation of new urbanist practitioners.
Attending CNU XIV
The Congress was able to offer housing for the length of the main conference (4 days) at the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) dormitory for $75 total. This was a 10 minutes walk from the convention center and a central locaiton in Providence. Many NextGen members took advantage of this to lower their cost of attending the conference.
The Congress also offered volunteer positions for partial or full conference fee.
